Monserrate is a mountain that stands 3,152 metres (10,341 ft) above the sea level in Colombia’s capital city of Bogotá. On top of the mountain is a church devoted to El Señor Caído that was built in the 1600s. From the top of the mountain there is the most breathtaking views of the city. Pictures don’t do it justice.
We tried to visit Monserrate on Christmas Eve because the website told us it would be open. However, after we paid for a cab ride across town, we were informed that it was closed. So, learn from my mistake don’t try to visit Monserrate on Christmas Eve!

We woke up the next morning at 5:00 to make sure we were the very first people in line. We got there right when it opened at 6:30. There are 3 ways to get to the top of the mountain: train, cable car, or take an hour long hike. We chose to take a cable car for $19,000 pesos (about $6).
I am so thankful we decided to wake up early to beat the crowds. There was practically nobody else on the mountain besides us, people attending church, and shop vendors. We stayed up there for about 2 hours and got some amazing shots without anybody else around.
On our way back down the mountain there were swarms of tourists showing up and it started to get really crowded. So, if you ever have the chance to visit this beautiful place it is definitely worth it to wake up early and avoid the crowds.
